The Rotomoulding Procedure in Detail

This moulding operation has been used since early times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians for instance, used roto-molding systems in the making of ceramics. The Swiss were also employing this rotation style to create hollow chocolate eggs. Some plastic product lines in the USA were developed utilizing this method some time between 1940 and 1950. The procedure has however taken very long to catch on because it was looked at as being a rather slow process

1. Mold readying.
A fixed measure of polymer in grain form is filled into a hollow mould. The mould is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The colour chosen for the finished item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic manufacturing.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and inserted within the oven.

2. The heat and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The spinning is done slowly, about 20 rotations per sixty seconds. One thing that is important at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose value and strength, creating a poor product. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which produces bubbles in the completed item.

3. Mould cooling.
When the component has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of extraction from the mold. This is an additional step that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too quickly, causing bending of the material.

4. The unloading or de-moulding phase.
When the component inside te mold has cooled properly, the person managing the procedure can then extract the finished product from the mould. The technique is repeated from the beginning, making a number of similar product lines.
