The Roto-Molding Method Components

The technique has however taken very long to catch on because it was considered as being a rather slow-moving process

1. Mold fitting.
A predetermined measure of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mold. The mould is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The color desired for the end product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic manufacturing.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and installed within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly, about 20 rotations per minute. The main thing that is essential at this point is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and strength, producing a faulty item. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which creates bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the material has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces a little for ease of removal from the mold. This is one more step that relies a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too rapidly, causing bending of the item.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding phase.
As soon as the product within te mold has cooled adequately, the molder handling the process can then remove the finalized product from the mould. The technique is repeated from the beginning, giving a number of similar items.
