The Roto-Molding Process Components

1. Mould preparation.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in powder form is filled into a hollow mold. The mold is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloration wanted for the end goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and inserted inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion step.
Once within the oven, the mould is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The spinning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 spins per minute. Something that is vital at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose stability and strength, creating a faulty product. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which develops bubbles in the finalized item.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the component has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mold. This is yet another procedure that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too rapidly, causing warping of the product.

4. The offloading or de-molding step.
When the component inside te mould has cooled adequately, the molder handling the process can then remove the finalized item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, giving a series of exact products.
