The Rotomolding Procedure Components

1. Mould readying.
A predetermined volume of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mould. The mold is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic manufacturing.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and positioned into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per min. Something that is essential at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose value and durability, producing a faulty item. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which produces bubbles in the finalized item.

3. Mould cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is yet another step that depends a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too quick, causing bending of the product.

4. The unloading or de-moulding phase.
When the product within te mold has cooled correctly, the person handling the operation can then take out the finished item from the mould. The technique is repeated from the beginning, making a number of identical products.
