The Roto-Molding Method Components

1. Mold preparation.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mold. The mould is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and installed into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once within the oven, the mould is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The spinning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 spins per min. Something that is vital at this point is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose stability and durability, making a faulty item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted properly, which creates bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the product has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of removal from the mould. This is another procedure that depends a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too quick, causing bending of the material.

4. The discharging or de-moulding phase.
Once the material within te mold has cooled correctly, the molder handling the procedure can then take out the finalized product from the mould. The procedure is repeated from the start, providing a number of similar items.
