The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

1. Mould readying.
A predetermined measure of polymer in powder form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mould is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The coloration needed for the finished product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic assembly.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and installed within the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The spinning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 spins per minute. Something that is critical at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose stability and durability, creating a poor product. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which develops bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the component has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is another procedure that depends a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too fast, causing bending of the product.

4. The removing or de-molding phase.
As soon as the component within te mold has cooled effectively, the molder handling the operation can then take out the completed item from the mold. The function is repeated from the start, supplying a series of identical products.
