The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

1. Mold prep work.
A fixed amount of polymer in powder form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mould is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The colour needed for the final goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic assembly.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and placed within the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The rotation is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per sixty seconds. Something that is critical at this point is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and durability, making a poor product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted properly, which generates bubbles in the completed product line.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the product has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces a little for ease of extraction from the mould. This is an additional measure that relies a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too quick, causing warping of the product.

4. The un-loading or de-molding step.
Once the material inside te mould has cooled properly, the molder managing the procedure can then extract the completed product from the mould. The technique is repeated from the start, making a series of exact product lines.
