The Rotomoulding Procedure in Detail

1. Mold readying.
A fixed measure of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mould is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and placed inside the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion phase.
Once inside the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 spins per minute. Something that is important at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose stability and strength, making a weak product. If it is removed from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which develops bubbles in the finalized item.

3. Mould cooling.
When the product has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of removal from the mold. This is yet another measure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quick, causing bending of the product.

4. The un-loading or de-molding phase.
Once the product inside te mould has cooled correctly, the molder managing the process can then extract the finalized product from the mould. The process is repeated from the start, providing a series of exact product lines.
