The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

1. Mold preparation.
A fixed volume of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mould. The mould is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloration intended for the end product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and inserted into the oven.

2. The heat and fusion procedure.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 spins per minute. Something that is important at this point is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose stability and durability, producing a faulty product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted properly, which creates bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the product has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of removal from the mold. This is an additional measure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too fast, causing warping of the item.

4. The un-loading or de-molding step.
Once the product inside te mould has cooled correctly, the person handling the process can then take out the completed item from the mould. The function is repeated from the start, providing a number of similar products.
