The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

1. Mould preparation.
A fixed volume of polymer in powder form is filled into a hollow mould. The mould is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and placed inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The spinning is done gradually, about 20 spins per minute. One thing that is vital at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and durability, creating a faulty product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which produces bubbles in the finalized item.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces a little for ease of extraction from the mold. This is yet another measure that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too quick, causing bending of the product.

4. The unloading or de-molding step.
When the component within te mould has cooled adequately, the molder handling the procedure can then remove the finished product from the mould. The procedure is repeated from the start, supplying a number of exact items.
