Looking for an alternative plastic rotational molding for Michigan for your current or next plastic product? With advanced techniques continually evolving in the industry, the variety of production choices may surprise you.

The technique of roto-molding (also called rotational molding) is employed a lot in the manufacturing of air and water-tight void plastic products, which may be what your looking for in the designing and production of your product.

Some of the places that it’s used in are the automotive, electronic and hydraulic industries to create hollow items in a wide range of sizes suitable for various functions. Plastic examples would include large hollow tanks, sports goods, automotive components, medical instruments, safety tools, furniture parts and aesthetic items. To talk to someone about using rotomoulding on a product you would like manufactured, go to www.rrtech.com or call

Main Benefits of Rotational Molding

Michigan rotomolding is an advanced and widely adaptable plastic approach. This technique is largely employed for the following reasons:

  • Hollow parts can be added in a single piece without any welds or joints
  • Stress-free multi-layered end products are made in a very short duration of time
  • The molds cost you less
  • Short and customized productions can be manufactured economically
  • Variations are possible in single type of product
  • Inserts and multi-part tools can be easily molded
  • Flexible complex designs can be made
  • Material wastage is minimized with re-use of the scrapped materials

This custom rotational molding process is becoming increasingly popular among retail manufacturers due to its promising advancements and its bright future in the plastic industry. For a no-obligation quote go to R & R Technologies.

How Does the Process Work?

Basically it works on a simple principle of settling down molten/powdered plastics via mold charging, heating, cooling and part ejection processes. Prime plastics used are cross-linked polyethylene, polyamide, vinyl acetate, polypropylene, PVC and nylon. Raw plastic granules or viscous liquid is introduced into a shell shaped hollow mold.

The mold is then rotated at relatively low speeds of 4-20 rev/minute while the plastic gets heated and adheres to the mold’s surfaces. It then forms a thin monolithic layer. After this, the plastic is cooled down so that it solidifies and the desired shapes are obtained.

To separate the product from the mold after the plastic gets rigid, the process is stopped. To execute the processes even faster, commercial machines with different rotating angles are used. The cycle can be continually repeated to get the desired quality of end products.

Rotomolding Involves Four Basic Phases

i) The Mold-Plastic Polymer – A specified quantity is measured and placed in the mold defined by the nature and type of item to be molded.

ii) The Oven and Casting Stage – The type and quality of the polymer dictates the oven working temperatures used in melting the polymer in the mold. The polymer is melted while the oven is rotating and different plastic molded items are generated. The mold is then transferred to casting units to be casted into different hollow plastic items.

iii) Cooling Stage – The cooling of the plastic molded items is effected and controlled in the cooling chamber to ensure that they are of high integrity and also ensure that the items can be handled safely by the processors. Cooling rate is carefully regulated to ensure high quality molded items are produced. The cooling effect is normally done by fans fitted in the cooling rooms.

iv) Extracting – The removal of the rotational plastic items from the mold casting units. The finished plastic molded items with a predetermined quality are taken from the plastic rotational molded unit to be shipped out.

More Examples of Rotomoulded Items

There are to many to list but here are some more to consider: Marine items, spray carts, display pieces, waste cans, children toys, house holds items and covers, storage containers, furniture, road signs and bollards, pet house, helmets, kayak hulls and playgrounds slides, footballs, bins and refuse containers, road cones, storage tanks, furniture, road signs and bollards, planters, pet house toys, bin and refuse containers football and helmets. Rotational plastic molding is also use to make highly specialized hollow plastic molded items such as seals for inflatable oxygen mask, light weight for aero scope industry and approved containers for transportation of nuclear fissile materials.

Other Benefits to Consider

Because of the design flexibility with the mold building, they can be redesigned to effect various desired characteristics of the product such as flanges, detail logos and contours of the molded items. Also one can change the color of the product or add other additives such as ultraviolet light inhibitors to maintain consistency of the color of the plastic item in the sun.

The process can also be adjusted to allow production of different items either simultaneously or during different production periods. The custom rotational process enhance integrity of hollow plastics molded parts by ensuring consistent wall thickness in the items with stress free points, hence production of strong finished hollow plastic items. The tools and equipment used in Michigan rotomolding are of relatively low cost making the process cost effective/economic friendly compared to other methods of hollow plastic rotational molding.

Why Go for the Rotational Molding Process?

There is definitely a future in the industry for rotational molding Michigan services and the flexible production capabilities it can provide. The process will be in demand for manufactures of different kinds of products that involve tough and conductive plastics. As per the future prospects, plastic companies are planning to expand the use of this process in making more commercial products.
