The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

This moulding procedure has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl product lines. Egyptians for instance, utilized rotational molding techniques in the creating of ceramics. The Swiss were also working with this rotation design to create hollow chocolate eggs. Some plastic products in the USA were made utilizing this method some time between 1940 and 1950. The system has however taken very long to catch on because it was thought of as being a pretty slow process

1. Mould fitting.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mold. The mould is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The color desired for the end item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic assembly.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and inserted into the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mould is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The spinning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 spins per min. The main thing that is crucial at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and durability, generating a poor item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which generates bubbles in the finished product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces slightly for ease of removal from the mould. This is yet another procedure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too fast, causing bending of the product.

4. The unloading or de-molding phase.
Once the component inside te mould has cooled properly, the molder taking care of the process can then remove the finalized product from the mold. The technique is repeated from the beginning, providing a number of exact products.
