The Rotomolding Method Components

This moulding method has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians for example, used rotational molding solutions in the manufacturing of ceramics. The procedure has however taken long to take affect because it was looked at as being a pretty slow process

1. Mould fitting.
A fixed volume of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mold. The mold is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The colour desired for the end item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and put within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion step.
Once within the oven, the mould is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The spinning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 revolutions per sixty seconds. Something that is vital at this point is the amount of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose value and strength, producing a weak product. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which produces bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mold. This is an additional measure that relies a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too quickly, causing warping of the product.

4. The removing or de-moulding phase.
When the product within te mold has cooled effectively, the person handling the procedure can then remove the completed item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the start, making a series of identical items.
