The Roto-Molding Method in Detail

This molding technique has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl items. Egyptians for instance, utilized rotational molding methods in the making of ceramics. 1. Mould fitting.
A fixed volume of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mold. The mould is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloring wanted for the final product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic assembly.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and put within the oven.

2. The heat and fusion procedure.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 revolutions per minute. The main thing that is critical at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose value and durability, creating a faulty product. If it is removed from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which develops bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mold cooling.
When the material has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of extraction from the mould. This is another procedure that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quickly, causing warping of the product.

4. The un-loading or de-molding phase.
When the product within te mould has cooled correctly, the molder taking care of the process can then take out the finished product from the mold. The process is repeated from the start, supplying a series of identical products.
