The Rotomoulding Method in Detail

1. Mold prep work.
A predetermined measure of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mold. The mould is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The coloring needed for the final goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic production.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and inserted inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 revolutions per min. One thing that is essential at this point is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose stability and durability, producing a weak item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which creates bubbles in the finished product line.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the component has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of removal from the mould. This is yet another procedure that relies a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too quickly, causing bending of the product.

4. The unloading or de-moulding step.
When the component within te mold has cooled adequately, the molder taking care of the procedure can then take out the completed item from the mold. The technique is repeated from the start, giving a number of similar products.
