The Rotomoulding Method in Detail

1. Mould prep work.
A fixed amount of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The coloring intended for the final goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic manufacturing.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and installed inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once inside the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 revolutions per sixty seconds. Something that is vital at this point is the period of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose stability and strength, generating a faulty product. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which develops bubbles in the finalized item.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces slightly for ease of extraction from the mould. This is another procedure that depends a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too quickly, causing warping of the product.

4. The offloading or de-molding step.
As soon as the product within te mold has cooled successfully, the molder handling the procedure can then take out the completed item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the start, supplying a number of identical items.
