The Roto-Molding Process in Detail

This molding method has been used since earlier times for creatingvseverl items. Egyptians for example, employed roto-molding solutions in the of ceramics. The technique has however taken very long to catch on because it was considered as being a pretty slow-moving process

1. Mould readying.
A fixed amount of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The color tone preferred for the finished product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and inserted into the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 spins per min. One thing that is vital at this point is the amount of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose stability and strength, making a poor item. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which generates bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the product has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of removal from the mould. This is one more procedure that relies a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too rapidly, causing warping of the material.

4. The un-loading or de-molding step.
When the product within te mould has cooled correctly, the person taking care of the operation can then extract the completed product from the mould. The technique is repeated from the beginning, giving a series of similar items.
