The Roto-Molding Method Components

Because it was viewed to be a somewhat slow approach, the system has however taken long to catch on

1. Mould prep work.
A predetermined measure of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mold. The mould is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The coloring wanted for the finished product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic production.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and placed within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once within the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 revolutions per minute. One thing that is critical at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose stability and durability, making a faulty item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which develops bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of extraction from the mold. This is one more step that relies a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quickly, causing warping of the item.

4. The discharging or de-moulding phase.
When the component inside te mould has cooled successfully, the person handling the procedure can then remove the completed item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the start, providing a number of exact items.
