The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

1. Mold readying.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and inserted into the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion phase.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per sixty seconds. One thing that is essential at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose stability and durability, generating a faulty item. If it is removed from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which generates bubbles in the completed item.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the material has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is another measure that depends a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too fast, causing warping of the material.

4. The unloading or de-moulding phase.
Once the product within te mould has cooled correctly, the person managing the process can then extract the finalized item from the mold. The technique is repeated from the start, making a series of similar product lines.
