The Rotomoulding Method Components

This molding system has been used since early times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians for example, employed roto-molding procedures in the manufacturing of ceramics. 1. Mould fitting.
A predetermined volume of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mold. The mould is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloration intended for the end product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and positioned inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The rotation is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per min. Something that is important at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose stability and strength, producing a faulty product. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which develops bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces a little for ease of extraction from the mold. This is another step that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too rapidly, causing warping of the product.

4. The removing or de-moulding phase.
When the product inside te mold has cooled adequately, the molder handling the operation can then take out the finished product from the mould. The process is repeated from the start, making a number of identical product lines.
