The Rotomolding Method in Detail

This moulding procedure has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl items. Egyptians for example, worked with rotocasting solutions in the creating of ceramics. 1. Mould readying.
A predetermined volume of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mould. The mould is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The color desired for the end product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic engineering.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and put into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The spinning is done gradually, about 20 rotations per sixty seconds. The main thing that is critical at this point is the period of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose value and durability, producing a faulty product. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which generates bubbles in the finalized item.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of removal from the mould. This is one more step that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too quickly, causing bending of the material.

4. The unloading or de-molding phase.
As soon as the product within te mould has cooled effectively, the molder taking care of the operation can then take out the completed product from the mold. The function is repeated from the beginning, supplying a number of exact items.
