The Rotomolding Method in Detail

1. Mould fitting.
A predetermined measure of polymer in grain form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mould is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and put inside the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion process.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly and gradually, about 20 spins per min. One thing that is important at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose stability and strength, making a poor item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which generates bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mold cooling.
When the material has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks a little for ease of extraction from the mould. This is one more step that relies a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too fast, causing bending of the material.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding phase.
When the component inside te mould has cooled adequately, the molder taking care of the procedure can then remove the finalized product from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, making a series of identical product lines.
