The Roto-Molding Process in Detail

This moulding procedure has been used since early times for creatingvseverl product lines. Egyptians as an example, employed rotational molding techniques in the producing of ceramics. 1. Mould preparation.
A predetermined amount of polymer in grain form is filled into a hollow mold. The mold is usually crafted from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The color tone wanted for the finished goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and put inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly, about 20 spins per min. The main thing that is essential at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose stability and durability, producing a poor product. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which creates bubbles in the completed product line.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the component has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of removal from the mold. This is an additional measure that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too quick, causing bending of the item.

4. The unloading or de-molding step.
As soon as the material inside te mold has cooled successfully, the person handling the procedure can then take out the completed product from the mould. The technique is repeated from the beginning, giving a number of identical products.
