The Rotomoulding Method in Detail

1. Mould preparation.
A fixed measure of polymer in grain form is filled into a hollow mold. The mold is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloration preferred for the final product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and placed within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mould is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per min. One thing that is essential at this point is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose value and strength, producing a poor product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which creates bubbles in the finalized item.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces a little for ease of extraction from the mold. This is yet another procedure that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quickly, causing warping of the item.

4. The removing or de-molding step.
When the product inside te mold has cooled properly, the molder managing the operation can then take out the finalized product from the mould. The process is repeated from the start, making a number of similar products.
