The Rotomolding Process in Detail

1. Mould fitting.
A predetermined amount of polymer in powder form is filled into a hollow mold. The mold is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. Preheating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and positioned inside the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion phase.
Once inside the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per sixty seconds. Something that is crucial at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose value and durability, making a weak item. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which develops bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the component has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of removal from the mould. This is one more measure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too fast, causing warping of the material.

4. The removing or de-moulding phase.
Once the material within te mold has cooled correctly, the molder managing the procedure can then take out the finished item from the mould. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, providing a series of similar product lines.
