The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

1. Mould readying.
A fixed amount of polymer in grain form is filled into a hollow mold. The mold is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and installed into the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly, about 20 rotations per minute. One thing that is critical at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose stability and durability, creating a weak item. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which develops bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces slightly for ease of removal from the mould. This is one more procedure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too rapidly, causing warping of the material.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding step.
When the component inside te mold has cooled successfully, the person managing the procedure can then take out the completed item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, supplying a series of similar products.
