The Rotomolding Process in Detail

1. Mould readying.
A predetermined amount of polymer in powder form is filled into a hollow mould. The mould is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic manufacturing.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and positioned inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once within the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per sixty seconds. Something that is crucial at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose stability and strength, producing a faulty item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which creates bubbles in the finalized item.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks a little for ease of extraction from the mold. This is another measure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too quickly, causing bending of the product.

4. The removing or de-moulding step.
As soon as the product inside te mould has cooled correctly, the person taking care of the operation can then remove the finished product from the mould. The process is repeated from the beginning, supplying a number of identical items.
