The Rotomolding Method in Detail

1. Mould readying.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and placed into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once within the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The spinning is done slowly, about 20 spins per minute. Something that is crucial at this point is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose stability and durability, generating a faulty item. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which creates bubbles in the finished product line.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the material has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of extraction from the mold. This is yet another measure that depends a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too quick, causing bending of the item.

4. The discharging or de-moulding phase.
Once the product inside te mold has cooled effectively, the molder taking care of the operation can then remove the finished product from the mold. The process is repeated from the start, giving a series of similar products.
