The Rotomolding Process in Detail

This molding system has been used since early times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians for example, employed roto-molding procedures in the producing of ceramics. 1. Mold prep work.
A predetermined amount of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mold is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The color tone wanted for the end product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic engineering.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and put inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per min. One thing that is essential at this point is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose value and strength, making a weak product. If it is removed from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which creates bubbles in the finished product.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the material has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of removal from the mold. This is one more procedure that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too rapidly, causing warping of the item.

4. The removing or de-molding step.
When the component within te mould has cooled successfully, the person taking care of the procedure can then remove the completed product from the mold. The process is repeated from the beginning, giving a number of identical products.
