The Rotomoulding Method Components

1. Mould preparation.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mould is usually crafted from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloring desired for the final item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and put inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion step.
Once within the oven, the mould is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 rotations per min. The main thing that is important at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose value and durability, creating a faulty item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which generates bubbles in the completed product line.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the product has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mold. This is yet another procedure that depends a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too fast, causing warping of the item.

4. The unloading or de-moulding phase.
As soon as the material within te mold has cooled correctly, the person taking care of the process can then remove the finalized item from the mould. The technique is repeated from the start, giving a series of exact product lines.
