The Rotomolding Process Components

1. Mould fitting.
A predetermined volume of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The colour desired for the end product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic engineering.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and placed into the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion step.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The spinning is done slowly, about 20 rotations per sixty seconds. One thing that is vital at this point is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose stability and durability, making a weak product. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which generates bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mold. This is yet another measure that relies a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too fast, causing warping of the material.

4. The discharging or de-molding step.
As soon as the material within te mould has cooled effectively, the person handling the procedure can then take out the finished product from the mold. The technique is repeated from the beginning, supplying a series of identical products.
