The Roto-Molding Procedure Components

This molding method has been used since earlier times for creatingvseverl product lines. Egyptians for example, employed roto-molding systems in the manufacturing of ceramics. The Swiss were also employing this rotation technique to generate hollow chocolate eggs. Some plastic product lines in the USA were manufactured utilizing this approach some time between 1940 and 1950. The process has however taken very long to catch on because it was looked at to be a rather slow process

1. Mold fitting.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in powder form is filled into a hollow mould. The mold is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The color desired for the final item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and installed inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion step.
Once inside the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly and gradually, about 20 revolutions per min. One thing that is vital at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and strength, generating a weak item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which generates bubbles in the finished product line.

3. Mold cooling.
When the material has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces slightly for ease of extraction from the mould. This is another procedure that relies a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too fast, causing warping of the item.

4. The discharging or de-molding step.
As soon as the material inside te mold has cooled successfully, the molder managing the operation can then take out the finished product from the mold. The process is repeated from the start, making a series of exact items.
