The Rotomolding Method in Detail

1. Mold prep work.
A predetermined amount of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mould. The mould is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic assembly.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and put inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once within the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly, about 20 spins per min. The main thing that is important at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose value and strength, producing a weak item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which creates bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mold. This is an additional measure that depends a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too rapidly, causing bending of the material.

4. The removing or de-moulding phase.
As soon as the product inside te mold has cooled properly, the molder taking care of the process can then extract the finished item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the start, giving a series of similar product lines.
