The Rotomolding Process Components

This molding operation has been used since earlier times for creatingvseverl items. Egyptians for example, utilized rotomoulding solutions in the making of ceramics. The technique has however taken long to take affect because it was looked at as being a moderately slow-moving process

1. Mould fitting.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in powder form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mould is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The color tone intended for the end item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic engineering.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and put within the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion step.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 spins per sixty seconds. Something that is important at this point is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and strength, generating a weak item. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which produces bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mold cooling.
When the material has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of removal from the mould. This is one more procedure that relies a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too quick, causing warping of the item.

4. The offloading or de-molding step.
Once the material within te mould has cooled successfully, the person managing the process can then extract the finalized item from the mould. The technique is repeated from the start, providing a number of exact items.
