The Rotomolding Process in Detail

This molding technique has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl product lines. Egyptians for example, utilized rotomoulding procedures in the of ceramics. 1. Mould preparation.
A fixed amount of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The colour chosen for the finished product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic manufacturing.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and installed inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 revolutions per minute. Something that is essential at this point is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose stability and strength, creating a faulty item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted properly, which creates bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of removal from the mold. This is one more procedure that relies a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too quick, causing bending of the material.

4. The removing or de-moulding phase.
When the product within te mold has cooled adequately, the molder handling the procedure can then remove the finished item from the mold. The function is repeated from the beginning, making a series of similar product lines.
