The Roto-Molding Procedure in Detail

This moulding method has been used since early times for creatingvseverl items. Egyptians for instance, utilized rotational molding techniques in the manufacturing of ceramics. The procedure has however taken long to take affect because it was thought of to be a somewhat slow-moving process

1. Mold readying.
A predetermined measure of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mould is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloring chosen for the finished item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and positioned into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once within the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly and gradually, about 20 spins per sixty seconds. The main thing that is vital at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose value and durability, generating a weak item. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which produces bubbles in the completed product line.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the product has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of extraction from the mould. This is yet another procedure that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too quickly, causing bending of the material.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding phase.
When the product within te mold has cooled properly, the person managing the process can then remove the finished item from the mould. The function is repeated from the start, providing a series of identical product lines.
