The Rotomolding Method in Detail

This moulding process has been used since early times for creatingvseverl items. Egyptians for example, used roto-molding systems in the creating of ceramics. The process has however taken long to catch on because it was thought of as being a moderately slow-moving process

1. Mould preparation.
A predetermined amount of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mould. The mould is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The coloration wanted for the finished product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and placed within the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion process.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 spins per sixty seconds. The main thing that is important at this point is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose value and strength, generating a weak item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which creates bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the product has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mold. This is one more measure that relies a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too quickly, causing bending of the material.

4. The discharging or de-molding step.
When the material within te mold has cooled adequately, the molder taking care of the process can then extract the completed item from the mold. The function is repeated from the beginning, making a number of identical products.
