The Rotomoulding Process Components

1. Mold prep work.
A fixed amount of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic production.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and positioned inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once inside the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The spinning is done slowly, about 20 rotations per min. The main thing that is critical at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose value and durability, creating a weak item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which creates bubbles in the finished product.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the product has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mould. This is an additional measure that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too rapidly, causing bending of the product.

4. The removing or de-moulding step.
When the product within te mould has cooled adequately, the person handling the operation can then remove the completed item from the mold. The function is repeated from the beginning, making a number of exact products.
