The Rotomoulding Procedure in Detail

1. Mould preparation.
A fixed measure of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mould. The mould is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and positioned into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The spinning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per minute. Something that is essential at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose stability and durability, producing a weak product. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted properly, which generates bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mold cooling.
When the material has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of removal from the mold. This is an additional step that depends a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too rapidly, causing bending of the material.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding phase.
As soon as the component within te mold has cooled successfully, the molder handling the procedure can then remove the finished product from the mold. The function is repeated from the beginning, supplying a series of exact items.
