The Roto-Molding Method Components

This molding method has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl product lines. Egyptians for example, used rotational molding methods in the producing of ceramics. The process has however taken very long to catch on because it was considered as being a relatively slow process

1. Mould fitting.
A fixed volume of polymer in grain form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mold is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The colour preferred for the end product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic engineering.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and placed within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The rotation is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per minute. Something that is important at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose value and strength, making a faulty item. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which produces bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the product has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks a little for ease of extraction from the mold. This is yet another step that depends a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too quick, causing bending of the item.

4. The removing or de-molding step.
Once the material inside te mold has cooled effectively, the person taking care of the procedure can then remove the finished product from the mold. The technique is repeated from the start, providing a series of exact items.
