The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

This moulding process has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians for instance, applied roto-molding methods in the of ceramics. 1. Mold preparation.
A predetermined measure of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mold is usually crafted from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The color tone preferred for the end item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic manufacturing.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and put within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once inside the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 rotations per min. Something that is critical at this point is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose value and strength, creating a poor product. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which develops bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of removal from the mold. This is one more measure that relies a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too fast, causing warping of the item.

4. The unloading or de-moulding phase.
As soon as the component within te mold has cooled effectively, the molder handling the process can then extract the finalized product from the mold. The function is repeated from the beginning, supplying a series of identical products.
