The Rotomolding Method in Detail

This moulding procedure has been used since earlier times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians as an example, used rotocasting methods in the creating of ceramics. The process has however taken very long to take affect because it was thought of to be a pretty slow process

1. Mould readying.
A fixed measure of polymer in powder form is filled into a hollow mold. The mould is usually crafted from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloring needed for the finished product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and placed within the oven.

2. The heat and fusion step.
Once within the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per min. One thing that is important at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose stability and durability, generating a poor item. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which creates bubbles in the finalized item.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of extraction from the mold. This is another procedure that depends a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too rapidly, causing warping of the item.

4. The unloading or de-molding step.
When the component inside te mould has cooled effectively, the person handling the process can then extract the completed product from the mould. The process is repeated from the start, supplying a number of similar products.
