The Roto-Molding Process in Detail

1. Mould readying.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mold. The mold is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The color tone wanted for the end goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic manufacturing.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and put into the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion step.
Once within the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 spins per min. The main thing that is essential at this point is the period of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and strength, producing a faulty product. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which generates bubbles in the finished product line.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the component has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces slightly for ease of removal from the mould. This is another measure that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quick, causing bending of the product.

4. The discharging or de-moulding step.
As soon as the product within te mould has cooled properly, the molder handling the process can then extract the completed item from the mold. The function is repeated from the beginning, making a number of similar products.
