The Rotomolding Process in Detail

1. Mold readying.
A fixed quantity of polymer in powder form is filled into a hollow mold. The mould is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The color desired for the end item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic production.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and placed within the oven.

2. The heat and fusion phase.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 spins per minute. Something that is critical at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and durability, making a poor product. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which produces bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mould cooling.
When the product has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces slightly for ease of extraction from the mold. This is yet another procedure that relies a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too quickly, causing warping of the product.

4. The removing or de-moulding step.
Once the component inside te mold has cooled properly, the person handling the process can then remove the completed product from the mold. The function is repeated from the beginning, making a number of identical products.
