The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

1. Mould readying.
A predetermined volume of polymer in grain form is filled into a hollow mould. The mold is usually crafted from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The color chosen for the end goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and placed within the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion phase.
Once inside the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 revolutions per sixty seconds. One thing that is vital at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose value and durability, making a weak item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which creates bubbles in the finished product line.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the product has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks a little for ease of extraction from the mould. This is yet another measure that relies a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too quickly, causing warping of the material.

4. The discharging or de-moulding step.
Once the component inside te mold has cooled correctly, the molder managing the process can then extract the completed item from the mould. The technique is repeated from the beginning, providing a number of exact items.
