The Rotomoulding Process Components

1. Mold readying.
A predetermined volume of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mold. The mold is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic engineering.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and inserted into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 spins per minute. One thing that is essential at this point is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and strength, creating a poor item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted properly, which produces bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mold cooling.
When the material has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of removal from the mold. This is another procedure that relies a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too fast, causing warping of the item.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding phase.
When the product within te mould has cooled properly, the person handling the procedure can then remove the finished product from the mold. The technique is repeated from the start, giving a series of identical items.
