The Rotomolding Process in Detail

1. Mould fitting.
A fixed quantity of polymer in powder form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mould is usually crafted from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic manufacturing.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and installed into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once within the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The spinning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 revolutions per min. The main thing that is critical at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose value and strength, producing a weak item. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which develops bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mold cooling.
When the material has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of extraction from the mould. This is an additional procedure that relies a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too quickly, causing bending of the material.

4. The discharging or de-moulding phase.
As soon as the product inside te mold has cooled successfully, the person managing the operation can then extract the finished item from the mold. The technique is repeated from the beginning, making a series of identical product lines.
