The Roto-Molding Process in Detail

1. Mold fitting.
A predetermined amount of polymer in grain form is filled into a hollow mold. The mould is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The color wanted for the finished goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic engineering.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and installed within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The turning is done gradually, about 20 spins per minute. Something that is critical at this point is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose value and strength, producing a poor product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which generates bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the product has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks a little for ease of removal from the mold. This is yet another measure that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too rapidly, causing bending of the item.

4. The discharging or de-moulding step.
As soon as the product inside te mold has cooled properly, the person managing the process can then extract the finished item from the mould. The technique is repeated from the beginning, giving a series of similar products.
