The Rotomolding Method in Detail

1. Mould readying.
A fixed amount of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mold. The mold is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The coloring needed for the end product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic engineering.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and inserted into the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 rotations per minute. One thing that is vital at this point is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and strength, producing a weak product. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which produces bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the component has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of removal from the mould. This is another measure that relies a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too fast, causing bending of the material.

4. The unloading or de-molding phase.
As soon as the component inside te mold has cooled correctly, the person taking care of the operation can then remove the finalized product from the mold. The technique is repeated from the start, giving a number of similar product lines.
