The Rotomolding Procedure in Detail

1. Mould fitting.
A predetermined measure of polymer in powder form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mould is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and positioned within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once within the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The spinning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 spins per sixty seconds. The main thing that is crucial at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose value and strength, creating a poor product. If it is removed from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which produces bubbles in the completed item.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the component has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of removal from the mould. This is an additional step that relies a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too quickly, causing bending of the material.

4. The offloading or de-moulding step.
When the component inside te mold has cooled effectively, the person managing the process can then extract the finished item from the mold. The process is repeated from the beginning, providing a number of similar products.
